Most people get the runny nose, aches and pains, the sore throat, and the headaches at least two to three times a year. Doctors say that strong immunity helps your body fight off viruses, bacteria and infections. But, how can one 'super-charge' his/her immunity? There is a plant that some believe has miracle powers... A number of studies have confirmed its beneficial effects on immune response. In effect it could protect your body against respiratory conditions like colds and flu. Sounds good so far... What I'm talking about is Echinacea, which is known for its immunity-enhancing benefits. Of course, it's not 'miracle medicine' yet. The interesting thing about Echinacea is that it was used by the American Indians initially as a remedy for cuts or infections. Has it been tested, and is it proven to work?Researchers from the University of Connecticut school of pharmacy performed 14 studies where healthy volunteers were exposed to colds and given Echinacea. And, they were compared to matched groups with colds who didn't take the herb (placebo groups). What they had learned, is quite interesting... The researchers calculated that taking Echinacea lowered the chance of getting a cold by 58 per cent and it shortened the duration of a cold by 1.4 days. In one study of people taking Echinacea in combination with Vitamin C, the combination appeared to reduce the chances of getting a cold by a whopping 86 per cent. So, if you worry about catching the cold or flu, I think it's worth giving Echinacea a go. But... At least two questions remain unanswered. One, will it work for the rest of us? It obviously has worked in some studies. Two, how is Echinacea, the scientists were using in their tests, different to the one you can get over the counter? Interesting questions... And, obviously, more research is needed to understand the role of Echinacea across a wider variety of autoimmune diseases. The plant is effective for some types of colds and flu, but not as good for others. Echinacea products are sold in different forms. You can get it as a liquid extract, as tablets, capsules, and even teas. And, they all contain different parts of the plant. Some are derived from the plants' root, flower or stem. Then there are different species of the plant (with some species possibly more medically effective than others). If you thought that was confusing enough, then they all come in different dosages. Keep in mind that Echinacea may cause allergic reactions, may increase asthma symptoms, and it may cause gastrointestinal problems. So, the challenge, I guess, is in finding the one that will produce optimal results for you, without any serious side-effects. I find that Echinacea in liquid form is most effective, since it's absorbed into the bloodstream quicker. If you're after a particular brand, I recommend you try Echinaforce Protect from Avogel. Simply because it's certified organic, GMO-GE free, and it contains fresh herb extract. It even has a dispensing dropper insert that will keep your bottle clean. This is a quality Swiss product, and unfortunately we don't stock it, but you can get it from all good health food shops, and some pharmacies.
